Downtown group outlines Harrisburg Saint Patrick’s Day parade, Lucky Charm 4‑mile race and closures

Todd Vanderwoody, executive director of the Harrisburg Downtown Improvement District, and Sydney Musser, parade organizer and social‑media coordinator, presented details on the annual Saint Patrick’s Day parade and associated events to City Council on March 10.

Vanderwoody said the parade will stage on City Island, proceed across Market Street Bridge, travel down 2nd Street, turn at North Street and Front Street and return to City Island; the formal parade start is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21. He said a Lucky Charm 4‑mile race begins at noon on the same route and is limited to 1,000 entrants, with awards presented around 1:30 p.m., and that many parade groups from across Pennsylvania will participate.

Musser said the parade is expected to last about an hour, listed more than 60 participating groups (pipe bands, marching bands, dance troupes and community organizations) and outlined street closures: general closures roughly 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Market Street Bridge 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on March 21. She directed attendees to the parade website for route maps and full details and noted event parking at Market Square Garage for a $10 special‑event fee.

Council members had one brief question about activities at Strawberry Square; Musser said she did not believe there would be programming there this year. The downtown group asked council and residents to wear green and expect substantial street closures during the midday event.
