Lincoln County approves $10,000 for Alamo cemetery upgrades; Pioche support deferred

"There are more unmarked graves than initially anticipated," Commissioner Mike Reese said, describing the need to level donated parcels and to scan areas to identify burial sites. He suggested the road department could assist with upgrades and recommended initial allocations be limited to new sites.
Commissioner Lisa Poulsen said the town boards should take responsibility but that county assistance for new developments was appropriate because the issue presents a health concern. Chair Janine Woodworth noted that taxpayer funds can be used only for public cemeteries.
After discussion about scanning costs (Janine cited a $7,000 figure) and whether private-land scanning should be covered by county funds, Reese moved to allocate $10,000 to the Alamo Town Board for cemetery upgrades from the General Fund; the motion was seconded by Chair Janine Woodworth and carried unanimously.
The board did not approve a separate allocation for Pioche at this meeting; commissioners agreed town boards should begin land-identification and development processes and may return to the board for additional funding requests as needed.
The board's decision authorizes towns to use the funds solely for cemetery-related work; details and any future allocations will be considered in subsequent agendas.
