Staff report: Pickleweed construction timeline, lockers and community programs update

Summary
Library staff updated trustees on construction at Pickleweed and Northgate, rollout of hold lockers at Alborrow Community Center, distribution of student library cards, and upcoming community events including One Book/One Coast and a Giants partnership.
The library’s staff liaison gave a summary of construction progress, logistics and upcoming outreach programs during the April 14 meeting.
Staff reported that construction activities at the new branch include drywall and taping; furniture delivery will determine the exact opening date. Lockers for holds pickup are installed at the Alborrow Community Center to provide after-hours access; staff said this arrangement will continue while Northgate remains open and that lockers would move to another community center when operations shift.
The liaison described a student-cards initiative that produced physical cards for TK–3 classes and 3,700 digital cards for middle and high school students. Staff said they are participating in regional reading initiatives (One Book, One Coast) with associated events (guided Angel Island hike and a virtual author talk) and that they received a state grant for "Lunch at the Library" programming to place staff-driven activities at school lunch sites over the summer.
Staff also said they will recruit two paid interns for summer programming and will host a county 'career explorer' placement for ages roughly 15–21. The library has partnered again with the San Francisco Giants for an April 26 library day event that will donate $5 per ticket purchased through a library link.
Why it matters: Trustees noted the importance of tracking construction milestones and outreach timelines so the board can provide oversight and community information. Staff said they will continue to circulate schedules and include trustees on distribution lists for newsletters and event links.
Next steps: staff will confirm furniture timelines, continue community-engagement survey work for the new library project, and return with updates as programming is scheduled.
