Council approves enhanced PERA coverage resolutions for police and fire

Corrales Village Council combined and approved two resolutions (26-18 and 26-19) authorizing an election for adoption of an enhanced municipal Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) coverage plan for police and fire members. Village staff said the funding implications were already included in the current fiscal year’s budget and any change would not take effect until the first full pay period in August.
Both the police and fire chiefs addressed the council in support of the change. The chiefs described the plan as an enhancement to retirement credit — moving from a 2.5% to a 3.5% multiplier per year of service — that will improve recruitment and retention by making retirement benefits more competitive. The chiefs framed the change as the culmination of long-standing work with state PERA representatives.
Councilors asked whether the chiefs opposed the change; both chiefs indicated no objection and said the plan would help staff retention. Melanie confirmed the village had budgeted for the change in the current fiscal year and that the effective date would align with payroll cycles.
Council approved the resolutions by roll-call vote. Staff will proceed with procedural steps required by PERA to complete the election and implement the changes in accordance with state timelines.
