Two North Brunswick students named governor’s STEM Scholars are honored at school board meeting

The North Brunswick Township Board of Education on Oct. 29 recognized two students from the district who were selected for the governor’s STEM Scholars Program and read a resolution to preserve the honor in the board’s permanent minutes.

Superintendent Dr. Zikowski and Science Supervisor Janine Lamphere highlighted the rarity of the selection. Lamphere noted the district had many qualified candidates and praised the students’ participation in district programs that helped prepare them for the statewide opportunity.

"They have grabbed onto every opportunity including coming to last year's first semester at the high school and hearing the presentation about the governor's seminary appointment," Lamphere said, praising the students' sustained engagement in STEM programming. The resolution names the students and directs that a copy be spread upon the permanent minutes of the board.

Two students who addressed the board described their gratitude for family and teachers and outlined early-stage research work. One said she and her sister were "very grateful for this opportunity" and thanked parents and STEM teachers. The other student described team work on testing nitrate levels to help address "blue baby syndrome" in underrepresented communities.

Board members and the superintendent congratulated the students and their families, noting that only 101 students statewide were selected in the program across 19 counties. The recognition was presented during the regular meeting and will be included in the official minutes.
