Board approves $1.37 million CalSHAPE HVAC services award and CO2 monitor rollout

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board voted to award a CalSHAPE HVAC services contract to Pacific West Inc. for $1,366,166, to be paid entirely with CalSHAPE grant funds.
Dr. Alford explained the contract covers a districtwide HVAC evaluation, replacement of filters and installation of CO2 monitors in classrooms. “It will be a whole evaluation of all of the HVAC systems throughout the district schools,” Dr. Alford said, adding that the grant funds will cover the work and not the general fund.
Board members asked about timing and scope. Staff said the evaluation should be completed by July 31 to position the district to apply for an additional $6,000,000 in CalSHAPE funding. Trustee Sanjell noted the district has about 611 HVAC units and stressed the contract is an assessment and upkeep effort rather than replacement of units.
The board approved the award after a motion and second; the contract was described as ready to be signed and executed immediately upon board approval. Staff told trustees they have already engaged in preparatory work and that Pacific West would begin work this week if the board approved.
The action included a funding-source clarification: all costs will be covered by the CalSHAPE grant, not the district’s general fund. Staff said the district’s eligibility excludes non-school-site facilities (district office, South Bay Adult School) from the grant scope.
Board members recorded the motion in open session; staff will report back on evaluation results and any subsequent applications for additional CalSHAPE funds.
