San Dimas marks Donate Life Month, upcoming community events and honors fallen deputy

The San Dimas City Council opened its April 14 meeting with two recognitions and a series of community announcements.
The council proclaimed April as Donate Life Month and welcomed Jolene Vargas, who identified herself as a three-time kidney transplant recipient and a Donate Life legacy ambassador. Vargas told the council she has ‘33 years of extra life’ because of donors and invited residents to a Donate Life run/walk on April 25 at Azusa Pacific University’s soccer field to honor donors and families.
The council also read and reaffirmed a proclamation honoring Los Angeles County Deputy Levi Vargas, who died while competing in the Baker to Vegas relay. The proclamation directed that flags at San Dimas facilities be lowered to half-staff until the day of burial and encouraged community members and organizations to observe the period of mourning.
Council members and staff provided several community updates: the Parks & Recreation director invited residents to an April 25 Arbor Day/Earth Day celebration and open house at the recreation center; the San Dimas Library manager promoted a bilingual family concert on April 18 and the regional "One Book, One Coast" program; and organizers previewed the city’s July 3 celebration (classic car show, live bands, a farmer’s market and a 350-drone finale). The city manager also announced a LA County Fire training exercise at Bonelli Park and a May 2 countywide open house at Fire Station 64.
The meeting concluded with a request to adjourn in memory of Deputy Vargas.
