Tourism board awards $85,000 in preliminary grants to local organizations; two requests denied

The White Pine County Tourism and Recreation Board allocated $85,000 in preliminary aid-to-organization grants at its March 25 meeting after reviewing 23 applications totaling $153,383.11.
Chairman Terrill Trask led approvals of a slate of awards. Notable allocations included $13,000 each to White Pine Horse Races and White Pine Productions; $6,000 to Great Basin Pyrotechnics; $5,000 to the Ely Lions Club; $4,650 to the White Pine Public Museum; and assorted smaller awards across civic and event groups. The board denied a request from Bristlecone Bowmen because its nonprofit status was not in good standing and declined to award funds to the Northern Nevada Railway Foundation.
Several board members made conflict or affiliation disclosures before voting. Member Janet VanCamp disclosed she serves (unpaid) on the White Pine Public Museum board and said she would follow legal counsel's recommendation; Member Jason Bath disclosed family relationships with individuals associated with White Pine Main Street and an Ely Renaissance Society board member but stated he would vote based on counsel's advice.
