Summary
Council consented to an ordinance assigning the City-owned Vampire Penguin lease at 1008 Lawrence Street SW to new tenants; the outgoing proprietor said she will remain locally involved while expanding the brand.
Aiken City Council on April 13 approved first reading of an ordinance consenting to assignment of the Vampire Penguin lease at 1008 Lawrence Street SW from the current operator to new tenants.
City staff said the assignment transfers existing rights, title and interest in the lease; the lease was originally approved by council in March 2024 and remains assignable. Staff told council the developer of an adjacent hotel had been notified and raised no objections, and that rent will continue to be paid to the city as owner of the property.
The outgoing proprietor (identified in the meeting as miss Mosley) addressed the council and said selling the store does not mean she is leaving Aiken — she described plans to grow the brand statewide and work on a Vampire Penguin food trailer for local events while retaining ownership of a separate spa business.
Council praised the proprietor’s local entrepreneurship and approved the assignment on a unanimous vote.
