Fernley committee reviews Kimley‑Horn fieldwork as consultant outlines road safety timeline

The Fernley Senior Citizen Advisory Committee heard an update on the city's local road safety plan at its October meeting, including summary of multi‑agency attendance and on‑site field visits conducted with the consultant Kimley‑Horn.
Chair Jackie LaVoy recounted that the Sept. 22 kickoff meeting included representatives from the Nevada Highway Patrol, the Lyon County Sheriff's Department, the Nevada Department of Transportation, the acting city manager, the city engineer's office, the county road department and the school district. "Kim Kimberly Horn facilitated," LaVoy said, adding the consultant provided slides and data identifying locations that may need improvements.
LaVoy told members that teams split into two groups for field work on Oct. 7, driving to identified locations to evaluate lighting, striping, crosswalks and speed limits. She said Kimley‑Horn is compiling the data and is expected to provide materials to the city this month, with a formal report due in December and final recommendations by March 2026.
A member asked whether Kimley‑Horn is part of NDOT or an outside contractor; members confirmed the firm is an outside consultant hired by the city to prepare the plan. The committee did not take formal action but indicated it will await Kimley‑Horn's deliverables and follow up in future meetings.
Next steps: city staff to circulate Kimley‑Horn's draft report when available; the committee will review the consultant's recommendations and coordinate with the city and state agencies as needed.
