Summary
Sheriff Derek Foremaster told the Board a suspected ricochet from the Pioche gun range struck an Honor Camp building; Planning staff said they will pursue options including BLM land, signage and grant funding; the Board took no formal action.
Sheriff Derek Foremaster told the Lincoln County Board on Dec. 15 that investigators believe a ricochet from the Pioche gun range — a 9mm round — struck a building at the nearby Honor Camp, and that the Honor Camp has raised safety concerns.
"They’ve complained about the lack of safety at the gun range. The Honor Camp believes there was a ricochet that hit one of their buildings. It was from a 9mm," Foremaster said, asking the Board to consider whether the current location remains appropriate.
Planning and Building Director Cory Lytle told commissioners the county has been looking at moving the range to another tract of BLM land but noted conveyances are complicated by lead contamination and other issues. He said options include pursuing a right‑of‑way or open‑space conveyance and exploring funding through a SNPLMA grant, and that staff will incorporate range language into the county master plan. He also said the county can improve signage and public outreach in the near term.
No formal motion or change of location was approved at the meeting; Cory Lytle invited commissioners to review maps and said he will begin outreach with BLM and local stakeholders.
