Council approves increase to fire relief pensions from $3,600 to $4,600 per year of service

Council members discussed the association’s funding position; one councilor noted that PERA assets and funding were sufficient to support the change at current levels.
Mayor and council members voted by voice; Balaji and at least one firefighter who serves on the council were listed as abstaining from the vote because of their affiliation. Council approved the pension increase and the city will implement the increased benefit for eligible volunteers.
Council recorded no roll-call tally in the transcript; council members said the change would not impact the current budget and staff noted the Relief Association’s funding metrics in the packet.
