Detroit Lakes City Council voted to adopt the final 2026 budget and the final 2025 tax levy collectible in 2026, approving a levy of $9,260,561, a 6.46% increase from the 2025 levy.
The move followed a Truth-in-Taxation presentation by Heidi, who explained key tax terms and why the city proposed the levy. She said the city faces a roughly $100,000 reduction in Local Government Aid and added that the levy includes a $25,000 increase to match a state grant for the Lake Agassiz Regional Library roof and exterior work; the library contract itself added $19,540 to the levy. The presentation also noted a $50,000 capital equipment levy and use of available public safety aid to offset personnel costs.
Heidi walked through examples showing that for a typical $280,000 homestead the city portion of property taxes would be about $1,028.86 in 2026, and that in many cases the city portion would change very little year-over-year because of valuation and exclusion mechanics. She also explained the homestead market value exclusion phases and other relief programs administered by Becker County for qualifying taxpayers.
Finance chair Bokey moved the resolution adopting the budget and levy; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote. The council also adopted a companion resolution consenting to the final HRA levy.
