Council delays decision on fireworks ordinance to allow mapping and further review

Council members discussed operational details including a 50-foot restriction from any structure (which would preclude use in much of the city), whether lower-fire-risk areas in the center of town should be treated differently, and the possibility of designating specific locations where fireworks could be used safely. The Council also noted the Town Square could not be used for public fireworks that year because the Utah Symphony was scheduled to perform there on Independence Day. Council Member Andy Garland moved to continue consideration of the proposed fireworks ordinance to the next regular meeting; Council Member Kevin Payne seconded, and the Council approved the continuance with recorded Aye votes from Garland, Orme, Osborne, Payne and JC Simonsen.
Council requested additional work, including a map of allowable locations and clarifications on how community-sponsored events (such as Memorial Hill) would be treated under the ordinance.
