Residents urge Boulder City to plan for possible ICE operations during public comment

During the final public-comment period, multiple residents urged the City Council to consider preparedness planning and community guidance in the event that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducts operations in or near Boulder City.

Pamela Triolo told the council she was concerned about the speed at which a small town can be affected and asked for advance transparency and planning should a detention center or ICE activity come to the region. Cindy Swanson, who provided a local address, said residents need clear expectations for what to expect from local police and schools if federal agents appear and expressed concern about residents with disabilities being at higher risk during enforcement interactions.

Pat Murphy and other speakers asked that the council place an agenda item on a future meeting to discuss protocols, legal limits on federal agents in schools and the role of local law enforcement when federal actors are present. Leslie Belch and Char McElry likewise urged education and an organized community response rather than ad-hoc reactions.

Council members acknowledged the requests and members of the public repeated a desire for more information about what residents should do, whom to call, and how the city would coordinate or advise schools and first responders. City staff did not announce a formal next step during the meeting; council members invited staff to consider how to provide information to the public and to return with options for discussion at a future meeting.
