Cameron County schedules budget adoption meeting after brief revenue boost; $400,000 deposited into general fund

The chair reported that the courthouse recently received $400,000 into the county general fund and that staff managed a shortfall by using about $100,000 of reserves. The county’s treasurer reported October expenses totaling $161,188.77.
County officials said the proposed 2026 budget will be available for public review next Wednesday, followed by a scheduled special meeting on Dec. 30 to adopt the budget after the required 30-day review period. The chair said the budget will be posted online and staff will hold a meeting on Friday to finalize details before public release.
In related administrative items, the commissioners approved a $5,250 service agreement with Trane for HVAC maintenance and adopted a code of conduct and procurement policy designed to comply with 2 CFR Part 200, the federal uniform administrative requirements for grants. Commissioners also approved the 2026 meeting and holiday schedules, maintaining first-and-third-Thursday meeting dates and alternating Southern Tier meetings every other month.
The chair announced two additional meetings on Dec. 4: an emergency salary board meeting at 9:30 a.m. and an emergency retirement board meeting later that day to review an actuary’s cost-of-living recommendations required every three years. The commissioners said they will consult the solicitor about whether an evening meeting (6–9 p.m.) must be scheduled to set salaries for officials who will run for office in 2027.
