Travel Nevada and the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority presented tourism data showing strong economic contributions from rural visitors and discussed marketing strategies for Elko and surrounding areas.
Annette Perf (executive director, ALCO Convention & Visitors Authority) introduced Rafael Villanueva (Travel Nevada) who highlighted that rural communities attracted roughly 4.8 million visitors and accounted for about $2 billion in visitor spending, supporting an estimated 17,000 jobs in rural Nevada. Villanueva said that rural tourism helps fund local infrastructure, parks and schools through lodging and sales taxes and emphasized resident-sentiment research showing outdoor recreation and authenticity as key draws.
Villanueva described Travel Nevada’s organizational role (part of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs) and noted the commission structure and territory model; he described Elko as part of the “Cowboy Country” territory and urged local collaboration on marketing campaigns targeted at nearby drive markets (Sacramento, San Francisco, Boise and Salt Lake City) to increase overnight stays.
Council thanked the presenters; no formal action was required. The presentation emphasized stewardship and grant programs the division runs to help rural destination development and said staff will work with Elko on next steps.
