Summary
Superintendent Dr. Johnson highlighted recent arts and athletics honors, district programs (creative problem solving, K–12 theater), summer offerings, and reported a near‑94% college‑acceptance rate for the senior class with six Ivy League acceptances and more than $25.8 million in scholarships to date. The board also recognized students of the month from multiple schools.
During the Hoboken Board of Education meeting on April 14, Superintendent Dr. Johnson delivered a summary of district achievements and upcoming programming, and the board recognized students of the month from elementary through high school.
Dr. Johnson said the district’s performing arts programs earned recognition at the New Jersey Thespians awards (nominations for several shows) and noted two Foxy Awards in collaboration with Montclair State University. He described the district’s broad K–12 theater pipeline and said all five schools will perform in the Hoboken Cultural Affairs Summer Concert Series at Shipyard Park.
On academics and future readiness, Dr. Johnson described district participation in Johns Hopkins CTY creative problem solving for middle‑school students and a locally developed curriculum that augments that program. He said the district is exploring expanded partnerships (including Stevens Institute of Technology for math) intended to maintain rigor while reducing costs and increasing access.
Dr. Johnson gave enrollment and outcome details for the senior class: the district is approaching a 94% college‑acceptance rate; the class has recorded six Ivy League acceptances and one Air Force Academy acceptance; and, to date, students have earned more than $25.8 million in college scholarships (reported as scholarship offers from colleges and universities, excluding financial aid packages).
Earlier in the meeting the board recognized five students of the month from Brandt, Conners, Wallace, Hoboken Middle and Hoboken High School. Principals presented the honorees’ achievements and families were invited for a photo opportunity.
The superintendent closed by reminding the public of upcoming events (HPEF annual gala May 7, district spring concerts) and summer programming (Splash Into Literacy, math, and YWCA camp) and thanked staff and families.
