Board cites juvenile-unit billing ahead of budget target and approves routine payments

At the April 15 Lawrence County Prison Board meeting, the chair reviewed revenue and recruitment activity for the jail’s juvenile unit and the board approved routine financial items.
The chair said that through March 31 the juvenile unit had $545,400 billed and $445,800 collected year‑to‑date. "There was a total of $545,400 billed. Of that amount, $445,800 has been collected," he said, and noted a previous analysis that placed the unit’s break-even point at $500,000. The chair cautioned that revenue projections could be affected if juveniles are housed outside Lawrence County.
Board members discussed outreach and recruitment efforts: staff have scheduled appointments for the next two weeks, a vehicle was assigned for Deputy Woodsville’s regional visits (police lights were removed from that vehicle), and a new juvenile was expected to arrive that afternoon. A committee member said she will take the lead on juvenile contracts and will also pursue contracts involving female inmates as an additional revenue source.
On administrative business the board approved the March minutes, accepted the population report and authorized payment of the monthly bills. No executive session was requested; the meeting adjourned after a voice vote of 'ayes.'
The board signaled it will continue recruitment and contract work and will revisit revenue and funding later in the fiscal year as more data become available.
