The Lamar County School District Board adopted a revised Board Policy EO on service animals in schools.
The approved draft states that the district "authorizes the use, in all district facilities and property, of service or assistance dogs which have been specifically trained to alert people of symptoms or conditions resulting from a debilitating illness or disability that threaten their health." The policy specifies that emotional-support animals that provide comfort but are not trained to perform disability‑related tasks do not qualify as service animals under the policy.
Under the revisions, staff may require documentation that the dog is trained, certified or licensed as a service animal and owners must provide vaccination records and keep dogs groomed and free of pests. The policy places responsibility for supervision, care and liability with the owner; it also preserves district authority to exclude a service dog that is not housebroken, is out of control, poses a direct threat to others, or fundamentally alters a district program.
The motion to approve the policy change was made by Jennie Hensarling and seconded by Lance LeFan; the board voted 5-0 to adopt the revisions.
