The Kewanee City Council on June 9 tabled Bill 25-55, a proposed TIF redevelopment agreement with KTown Real Estate, after members and company representatives objected that the city’s TIF attorney had altered the agreement that the council had previously directed.
Council discussion noted that the version provided by the TIF attorney contained changes "based on what they thought was the best scenario," and several councilmembers and representatives of KTown Real Estate expressed displeasure that substantive alterations were made without first bringing changes to the council for discussion. Councilmembers Baker and Komnick rescinded earlier motions to approve; Councilmember Colomer then moved to table the item and the motion to table passed 5–0.
Council directed the city attorney to redraft the agreement per the council’s original direction; the item will return once staff and counsel produce a revised draft.
What’s next: The city attorney will prepare a revised draft consistent with council direction and the TIF item will be scheduled for a future meeting; no final approval occurred on June 9.
