Residents raise privacy concerns as Kewanee council examines City Detect AI code‑enforcement tool

At the June 9 Kewanee City Council meeting the Community Development Director introduced City Detect, a commercial system that uses vehicle‑mounted cameras and AI to identify potential ordinance violations from imagery captured while staff drive city streets.
Community Development Director Keith Edwards described how staff would drive with cameras that automatically flag suspected violations for later review, allowing the city to generate notices or dismiss false positives. Edwards presented the tool as a possible efficiency measure for ordinance enforcement.
Resident Obrey Blumenshine objected to data storage offsite, saying he was not "a fan of information about his home being on 'someone else’s server.'" He also questioned whether the system, used in larger metropolitan areas, would be cost‑effective for Kewanee’s smaller size.
Council discussion focused on privacy and cost tradeoffs. Members asked staff to arrange a demonstration from the vendor and to provide references from cities closer to Kewanee’s population before deciding whether to pilot or adopt the technology.
What’s next: Staff will seek a City Detect demonstration and reference checks; no procurement or pilot decision was made at the meeting.
