Summary
Secretary Christina Justice described staff composting programs and public events including an Earth Day celebration, April 23 creek cleanup and an expanded tree giveaway (3,000 trees, up from 1,500 last year) with main distribution in Tahlequah and satellite distributions planned.
Secretary of Natural Resources Christina Justice updated the council on internal and public-facing environmental programs and outreach.
Justice said two staff members recently earned master-composter certificates and that her office has set up composting systems in natural-resources buildings and is developing workshops and online materials to educate staff and the public.
She said seed distribution to citizens is ongoing and noted an Earth Day celebration set for Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the First Fire Field (open to the public). A creek cleanup is scheduled for April 23 from 9 a.m. until noon with lunch served; volunteers will meet at the Peace Pavilion in Tahlequah. The tree giveaway is scheduled for April 24 with the main distribution in Tahlequah; Justice said distribution will expand to smaller sites in Muldrow, Ocholedo, and Kenwood.
On the tree program, Justice said last year the office gave away 1,500 trees and this year they will distribute 3,000, the same species mix as the prior year.
She invited council members to attend Earth Day events and said her office hopes to expand public composting education over time.
