Youth council elects Alex LaFortune chair; Charlotte Barnes named vice chair

The Satellite Beach Youth Council elected Alex LaFortune chair and Charlotte Barnes vice chair during its inaugural meeting on Oct. 28, 2019.

During agenda item five, members discussed qualifications for leadership. A council member moved to nominate Alex LaFortune; another member seconded the motion. After brief discussion, the council conducted a voice vote and the presiding officer declared the motion to nominate LaFortune passed.

LaFortune then led nominations for vice chair. A motion to nominate Charlotte Barnes was made and seconded. The council again approved the nomination by voice vote, and the presiding officer announced that Barnes would serve as vice chair.

The nominations followed the procedure the council had been briefed on earlier in the meeting: speakers were reminded that nominations must be made by another member, require a second and are followed by discussion and a vote. The council did not record a roll-call tally in the transcript; outcomes were recorded in the meeting as passed by voice vote.

The newly elected chair said he would guide the group through setting priorities and next steps; Barnes will assume the chair’s duties in his absence. The council moved on to citizen comments and a schedule of monthly city-department presentations intended to orient members to municipal operations.
