The Needham public‑safety chief briefed the Finance Committee on personal protective equipment and vehicle replacements planned for FY27. The chief said national standards changed around 2018 and ‘‘now the firefighters are issued 2 sets of gear,’’ creating higher replacement needs and driving part of the $148,009 PPE request. Staff described the useful life of turnout gear as about 10 years and noted that retirements, promotions and hiring all affect annual replacement numbers.
Committee members asked how many sets the current request covers; the chief responded that the FY27 request funds approximately nine sets (to cover replacements, anticipated promotions and wear). The chief also confirmed two vehicles are slated for replacement in FY27 — the brush truck (Unit C7) and an inspector vehicle (Unit C42) — and described the inspector vehicle as a standard emergency‑response vehicle with lights rather than a specialty apparatus.
Staff said vehicle procurement will consider electric options where feasible, though heavy apparatus (e.g., fire engines) remain diesel/gas powered. The committee thanked the chief for the presentation and recommended the related fleet and PPE funding as part of the broader cash‑capital discussion.
Next steps: the PPE and vehicle requests will be included in the town’s cash‑capital article and considered along with other departmental requests at subsequent committee meetings.
