Public safety committee backs full-time co-responder hire, reviews handicap parking and snow-route changes

Councilwoman Fuller told council the public safety committee split a previously tabled handicap-parking motion and approved a request to place handicap parking at 426 Pierce Street while delaying additional research on 413 Delaware pending a site visit.
Fuller said the committee will ask full council to approve a contract to make Alexis Moyer a borough employee, expanding her co-responder position from 28 hours to 37.5 hours a week with full benefits. "The chief is highly in favor of this program," Fuller said, adding that the chief called Moyer a "game changer" for the police department.
The committee also recommended removing the snow-emergency route designation on the east side of Penbrook Avenue because many houses there lack driveways and residents have limited options to move cars during snow events; the designation would remain on the opposite side of the street.
Fuller reported other public-safety items including traffic-calming plans, additional enforcement in a West Ward corridor, plans to paint crosswalks near Newark Avenue Elementary School and consideration of loading-zone windows for Main and Wood intersections.
Next steps: the co-responder contract and handicap-parking and snow-route items will be presented to full council for action at the next meeting.
