The Modesto City Schools Board of Trustees on Feb. 11 directed district staff to present a contract with Leadership Associates for formal ratification at the board's next regular meeting, signaling the start of the formal superintendent search process. The direction reflects the board’s preference to engage a firm that previously supported the district’s leadership work.
President Maestas opened a discussion about stakeholder engagement and several trustees advocated for continued community input. Trustee Marks recommended retaining Leadership Associates because of past experience and knowledge of the district. The board recorded a formal direction to staff (not a ratification vote) to bring the contract back for board action at the next regular meeting.
The board also carried several unanimous votes on procedural governance matters:
- CSBA delegate assembly: The board voted unanimously to endorse Mary Jackson (Turlock Unified) and Ray Prock Jr. (Denair USD) as its two delegate assembly candidates. The motion to approve the two candidates was moved by Vice President Mejia and seconded by Trustee Ervin; the board clerk was instructed to submit original documentation required by CSBA.
- Credential assignment resolution: The board voted unanimously to adopt a resolution authorizing certificated staff who are credentialed in areas other than physical education to coach one period of athletics that provides PE credit. Trustee Ervin moved the resolution and Vice President Mejia seconded the motion; the measure passed with all ayes.
Board next steps: Staff were directed to prepare and present a contract with Leadership Associates for ratification at the next regular meeting and to submit the original CSBA documentation for the delegate assembly ballot, per CSBA rules. Human Resources was directed to implement the credential authorization resolution in coordination with site administrators and notify affected staff as appropriate.
No competing motions or roll call dissent were recorded during these items; the board’s actions were unanimous.
