Perris board adopts Title IX 'fairness in girls sports' resolution 4–1 after brief debate

The Perris Union High School District board voted 4–1 on April 16 to adopt a resolution the sponsor described as supporting Title IX fairness in girls’ interscholastic sports.

The trustee who introduced the resolution said the measure was intended to be proactive and to protect opportunities for female athletes, noting uncertainty about how state and federal guidance may evolve. “For the protection and safety of our female athletes, I think it’s the right thing to do,” the presenter said, framing the resolution as a step to ensure girls’ teams compete against athletes of the same biological sex.

Several trustees questioned whether the district was moving ahead too early and whether other districts had adopted similar resolutions. One trustee called the effort “picking a fight” and suggested waiting to see how state and federal policy develops; another trustee said the particular situation that prompted the discussion did not involve a team sport. The board discussed the potential risks to federal funding if a district were found out of compliance but did not identify specific statutes beyond general Title IX compliance concerns.

After discussion, the board took a roll-call vote and approved the resolution by a 4–1 margin.
