Woodson County commissioners met March 31, 2026, and approved contracts to upfit sheriff vehicles, awarded two tourism grants and signed vouchers totaling $255,459.14. The meeting included multiple executive sessions for attorney-client and personnel matters and a discussion of burn-permit process improvements.
The board voted to accept a bid to upfit a detective truck for $11,700 from Emergency Fire Equipment and a bid of $17,949.70 for two sheriff vehicles from Superior Emergency Response Vehicles. Commissioner Kevin Stuber moved both approvals; Jerry Sedlacek seconded the detective-truck motion and Sedlacek seconded the two-vehicle motion, and both motions passed. The quotes presented at the meeting also included a $16,600 option for two sheriff vehicles from Emergency Fire Equipment, which was not selected.
Commissioners approved two tourism funding requests: $850 for the Birdies and Bluegrass event and $3,000 for the Chamber of Commerce’s Bull Bash. Commissioner Kevin Stuber moved both grants; Commissioner Justin Clark seconded both motions and the board approved them.
During the meeting Road & Bridge Superintendent Gary Ward reported the department has begun summer hours and raised the need for a utility bed for the sign truck; commissioners recessed into an executive session to discuss non-elected personnel with Ward and Todd Green. The board also discussed abandoned logging equipment on private property and enforcement options, including issuing citations; no formal enforcement action was recorded in the minutes.
Darrin Petrowsky of the Kansas Department of Transportation requested an executive session to discuss confidential data and trade secrets. The clerk's office will collect additional information to determine Woodson County’s approach to hosting the upcoming KDOT annual meeting; the minutes record that the county will serve as host this year.
Treasurer Michelle Zimmerman met with the board in executive session and then reviewed procedures for uncollectible personal property taxes. Commissioners discussed modernizing the burn-permit process and considered shifting permit management to dispatch to improve efficiency.
The board signed vouchers in the amount of $255,459.14 after a motion by Commissioner Justin Clark that was seconded by Commissioner Kevin Stuber. Commissioners also discussed beginning the 2027 budget process. The meeting adjourned at 11:03 a.m.; the minutes were attested by County Clerk Amanda A. DeWitt.
Votes at a glance: approvals recorded in the minutes included agenda and minutes approval; executive sessions as moved and seconded on multiple occasions; upfit awards for the detective truck ($11,700) and two sheriff vehicles ($17,949.70); tourism grants ($850 and $3,000); and signing vouchers ($255,459.14). Where the minutes say only “motion passed,” no roll-call tally or yea/nay count is recorded in the transcript of the meeting.
