Board approves security imaging policy, including option to enable audio on buses; policy effective July 1

The Boise School District Board of Trustees approved Policy 33-13 and its regulation on April 13, authorizing security imaging systems and noting the district may enable audio recording on buses beginning July 1.

Director Hutchinson explained the second reading for Policy 33-13 and Regulation 33-13-R, describing them as related documents covering security imaging systems. "What you're really looking at when you look at the second read on these is, a note that we are taking the option of turning on the audio recording ability on our buses," Hutchinson said.

Trustee Donovan moved to approve the policy and regulation; Trustee Nakachia seconded the motion. Chair called for a voice vote and the motion passed. The board was told the policies will go into effect on July 1.

The board held no extended debate before the voice vote. Director Hutchinson said the drafts had been considered previously and no changes had been made since their prior review; trustees had the opportunity to ask questions during the first read. The action will give district administrators the authority to implement the security imaging systems and to decide whether to enable audio on buses, subject to any applicable law and administrative procedure.

Next steps: the policies take effect July 1; staff will continue implementation planning and any communication to families and staff about system operation or privacy protections.
