Council approves promotion of Anthony Runde to police chief, sets May 1 start date

The Brainerd City Council on March 16 approved the Personnel & Finance Committee’s recommendation to promote Anthony Runde to police chief effective May 1, 2026.
Chairman Gabe Johnson said the department posted the chief position internally after Chief Davis announced retirement, received one application and extended an offer to Runde; the promotion is set at step 1 of the police chief wage grid. Johnson also moved to approve an updated deputy police chief job description and to authorize staff to begin an internal hiring process to fill the deputy chief role after Runde’s promotion. Council approved the motion by voice vote and congratulated the chief‑to‑be.
Johnson said the department expects to have the deputy chief filled by May 1 as well, and staff will proceed with internal recruitment steps.
