Council approves switch of prosecuting services to county attorney

The council approved a resolution to transfer prosecuting services from Bodler Law Office to the county attorney Kristen Nelson’s office. City staff said Bodler notified the city they would not continue under the existing agreement; staff negotiated with the county attorney’s office, which indicated it had the county board’s approval to provide the services.
Craig Clark said the new arrangement would be essentially the same in cost as the prior contract. Police leadership also endorsed the change, saying the county attorney’s office has extensive experience handling felony and juvenile matters and would provide continuity for cases that use county systems. A council member asked why the offices were separated previously; staff said the separation dated back about 25 years and likely reflected past administrative differences.
The resolution passed unanimously, 7–0. Staff said the change was intended to be seamless and to maintain prosecution services without interruption.
