Commission reviews culinary class results and weighs after-hours rentals and open-gym availability

Summary
Staff reported 36 culinary programs offered in 2025 with 19 that ran and 173 participants; commissioners discussed leveraging the kitchen space, improving program scheduling and managing open-gym access and after-hours rental staffing for additional revenue.
Staff liaison Sue Earl presented a year-to-date review of the recreation center's culinary programs: 36 programs were listed for 2025, 19 of those ran and 173 participants took the classes that ran. Commissioners discussed instructor turnover early in the program year and whether kitchen capacity is being fully used to support revenue and community engagement.
"There were 36 programs offered, 19 of them ran, and from the 19 programs that ran there were 173 people that participated," Earl reported. Commissioners noted strong early interest after the kitchen opened in January followed by a lull; they encouraged staff to analyze 2026 enrollment trends before drawing conclusions about seasonality.
Related facility topics included open-gym availability for tweens/teens during summer day camp (staff reported gym closures last summer when day camp left belongings in the gym) and the possibility of after-hours rentals. Commissioners stressed that after-hours rentals would require staff coverage (front desk ambassadors or a site supervisor) and that any promotion of later rental hours should be contingent on confirming staffing and scheduling.
Commissioners agreed to continue reviewing program schedules and to discuss options to increase nighttime and summer programming while protecting staff capacity and existing day-camp needs.
