Trustees adopt new math and ELA instructional resources, approve consent agenda including hires

Denton ISD trustees on Feb. 10 voted unanimously to adopt new math and English language arts instructional materials and approved the consent agenda, which included personnel appointments.
Curriculum staff described the adoption process under the state's Instructional Materials Review (IMRA) rubric: publishers submitted materials that met the state's robust rubric, samples were distributed to teachers districtwide, and teachers and administrators were invited to vendor sessions and to provide feedback. Staff said the district received high teacher engagement — nearly 90% response in elementary — and that adoptions include publisher-provided digital resources and aligned English/Spanish materials where appropriate.
Staff outlined professional-development plans for implementation: an optional May teacher work day and summer training sessions, follow-up coach support and campus-level planning to unpack the first nine weeks of instruction. Trustees raised questions about technology integrations and assessment links; staff said they will pursue vendor discussions about data integrations (for example, HMH and i-Ready) and will provide additional training and materials for campuses.
On personnel, the board approved the consent agenda (moved by Miss Wright and seconded by Doctor Susta Sanchez) which included appointments such as Kelly Beard as principal of Union Park Elementary and Justin Evans as head football coach and athletic director at Ryan High School. The adoption motion for instructional math and ELA resources (moved by Doctor Cesar Sanchez; seconded by Doctor Dunwood) carried unanimously.
What happens next: Staff will schedule vendor training, offer May and August professional development opportunities for teachers, and roll out materials for classroom use starting in the coming school year.
