Denton — At its Nov. 11 meeting, the Denton ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve the district’s targeted improvement and turnaround plans after an extended presentation by area superintendents and staff.
Area superintendents Mrs. Brownell and Ms. Schultz outlined the district’s approach, saying the plans build on the district’s existing performance playbook and the Effective Schools Framework. They listed four primary focus areas: strong leadership expectations, strategic staffing (including year‑one data collection for the teacher incentive allotment), positive school culture, and selection of high‑quality instructional materials. Presenters emphasized regular milestones, capacity‑building through coaching and collaborative team planning (C4s), and stakeholder feedback gathered via October engagement events and thought exchanges.
The presentation identified campuses on targeted improvement (Alexander Elementary, Cross Oaks Elementary, Paloma Creek and Martinez Elementary) and turnaround campuses (Jennings at Evers and Providence). District staff said they have tiered campuses to tailor supports, are embedding short‑ and long‑term student outcome goals in campus plans, and will continue frequent monitoring through campus visits and professional learning team checks.
Officials said they will apply for external funding including a LASSO 4 grant and the prep‑allotment grant to support curriculum and instruction implementation, though they told trustees the district will proceed with selected materials and staffing strategies even if grant awards do not materialize. Trustees asked clarifying questions; several praised the performance playbook and the district’s emphasis on urgency and principal support.
After discussion, a motion to adopt the targeted improvement and turnaround plans was moved and seconded and carried unanimously.
What’s next: District staff said materials-selection work will continue through a December vendor fair and a January staff input process, with board presentation of options planned for February and implementation targeted for the 2026–27 school year.
