Mahomet staff proposes villagewide winter weather emergency ordinance; board supports drafting language

Village of Mahomet public works staff presented a proposal to broaden the village's snow-route ordinance into a Winter Weather Emergency ordinance at the Jan. 13 study session. Public Works Superintendent Eric Crowley asked the Board for input on amending Section 2-10 of Ordinance 07-12-03 to allow the Village President or designee to declare a winter weather emergency that would prohibit on-street parking on paved streets villagewide during certain events.
Crowley said the change would allow the village to address ice events as well as heavier snowfalls and would remove parked vehicles from roadways that he said impede snowplow operations. He proposed a trigger of 2 inches of snow or freezing rain for the emergency declaration. Trustees asked questions about triggers and enforcement; Trustee Schriver described how a different community he lived in handled similar rules. President Jason Tompkins said the proposed change would be a step toward better serving residents during winter storms, and the Board expressed support for staff to prepare draft ordinance language.
No formal motion or vote was taken on the proposed ordinance amendment at the Jan. 13 meeting. Crowley said staff will return with draft language for the Board to consider at a future meeting.
