Developers to fund crosswalk and beacons near Whitney Glen; board approves donation

The Board of Selectmen approved acceptance of an approximately $27,000 developer donation to fund a new crosswalk, two rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) and related sidewalk work on East Main Street in the vicinity of Whitney Glen Drive.
David Ginter, representing the developers of 455 Post Road East, said the donation would pay for the town work associated with the new crosswalk and flashing beacons intended to improve pedestrian safety around the Whitney Glen condominium complex. "We're seeking approval for the installation of the crosswalk… and the RRFBs," Ginter said.
Kate Van Sant, a Whitney Glen condominium association board member, told the board the complex is age-restricted (62+ required) with an average resident age of 77 and that the association conducted a survey documenting the need for the crosswalk. "It’s sorely needed, and we'd appreciate your approval," Van Sant said. Staff Corporal Demerra of the Westport Police Department described prior safety concerns at the location and supported the donation, noting that pedestrians currently cross without a marked crossing and that a new crosswalk, sidewalk and beacon signs would increase awareness.
The board approved accepting the donation and authorized staff to proceed with installation, noting the funding and installation will also be presented to RTM as part of the approvals chain.
