The Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees approved a series of personnel recommendations and a software purchase at its meeting, recording unanimous votes on each item.
The board approved hiring Carrie Holmes as a long-term substitute at Mitchell Junior High to cover a requested leave through 05/22/2026. The board also appointed December Smedley as an inclusion teacher at Mitchell High School for a position that has been vacant since January, and approved assigning Bobby Owens to the extracurricular strength and conditioning role in addition to his football coaching duties for the remainder of the school year.
The board appointed Lauren Lafever, currently a Mitchell Junior High teacher, as the Mitchell High School cheer coach to fill a vacancy created by a resignation. The board also approved moving Steve Hayhurst to a full-time night-shift custodian position at Hatfield Elementary after his 90-day probationary period.
In business matters, the board authorized purchase of a time-and-attendance management software package intended to integrate with the district payroll system and allow staff to record hours via time cards. The presenter stated the software would match the district payroll system used by Ruthie and Lenny and would allow the district to begin supporting time-card tracking for personnel.
The board also approved an unpaid leave of absence for a Mitchell Junior High teacher, Mr. Matt Souders, from April 20 through 05/22/2026, in accordance with provisions of the Community Schools MEA teacher contract. The presenter characterized the leave as unpaid and without benefits as outlined in the contract.
Each personnel and business item was moved and seconded during the meeting and approved on recorded votes of 5–0. The board convened and adjourned without further public comment.
