Oscoda County reports improved ice-storm response; 15 CDBG-funded generators on order

Commissioner Charles E. Varner, Jr. and County Administrator Michelle Knepp reported on Oscoda County’s response to a recent ice storm during the March 24 meeting. Varner said local departments coordinated effectively even though the county was not included in the state emergency declaration.
Knepp said the Mio Community Center served as a warming station for a few days and provided a status update on Government Center construction, which is awaiting insurance clearance and quote approvals; coordinating construction while staff remain in the building is a primary challenge.
The county is distributing generators purchased under a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Urgent Need program; Knepp told the board that as of late March 2026 fifteen generators were on order for distribution to local entities. The minutes did not list recipient organizations or a delivery schedule.
Treasurer William Kendall asked about Government Center construction timelines; Knepp said insurance and quote approvals are expected by late the week of the meeting or early the next week. No formal motions were taken on the construction update; the board noted ongoing coordination needs.
