Pasadena ISD spotlights child nutrition award and early college successes

The Pasadena Independent School District Board of Trustees recognized the district’s child nutrition program and early college initiatives during its June 25 meeting.
Mary Harriman, director of food services, and Jody DeFranco were acknowledged after the district was named a USDA 'Turn Up the Beat' recognition recipient for the third consecutive year. Harriman said the award recognizes summer meal sponsors who provide high‑quality, locally sourced, appetizing and nutritious meals: "To earn recognition, districts must serve local foods with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy products." The district was one of 38 Texas school districts and among 141 nationwide to be recognized.
Becky Benner, executive director of curriculum and instruction, presented early college program outcomes, noting attainment and access measures and that many students earn college credit before graduation. A recent early college graduate now at UT Austin sent thanks to the board and staff: according to a trustee, the student said being an early college graduate "gave him the tools that he needed to successfully advance" in his mechanical engineering studies.
Board members congratulated staff and students and thanked program leaders; no board action was required for these spotlight items.
