Summary
The council voted to adopt a resolution sending a recommendation to rename Ruggles Station to honor Phillis Wheatley, citing her role as a pioneering African American poet and connections to Boston; sponsors noted community support and past renaming precedents.
The Boston City Council voted on April 15 to adopt Resolution 0824 recommending that Ruggles Station be renamed to honor Phillis Wheatley. Councilor Culpepper introduced a substitute filing and emphasized the importance of aligning public-space names with the city's values and history, noting the prior renaming of Dudley Square to Nubian Square as precedent.
"Naming a major transit hub in Roxbury after Phillis Wheatley would be a powerful recognition of the community it serves," Culpepper said, and added that a petition in support had attracted community backing. Councilor Mejia, Councilor Worrell, Councilor Flynn and other members spoke in favor, highlighting Wheatley’s significance and the opportunity to uplift Black history in public infrastructure.
The council suspended the rules and adopted the resolution by roll-call vote. The resolution is a council action expressing support for the renaming; any actual renaming of MBTA property would proceed through the MBTA and follow its processes. Sponsors said they expect additional community engagement and coordination with transit authorities to follow.
The resolution’s passage signals council support for renaming an important transit hub in a neighborhood with deep historic and cultural ties to the city’s Black community.
