Northfield Council amends Mainland Youth Lacrosse schedule, rejects two Skyhawks field requests

The council amended Resolution 51-2026 to change Mainland Youth Lacrosse’s weekday field dates from Monday–Friday, Feb. 16–May 1, to Monday–Friday, Feb. 1–March 31, to eliminate a conflict with Mainland Babe Ruth. The amendment was offered by Councilman Notaro, seconded by Councilman Dewees, and approved by unanimous roll call (Carfagno, Dewees, Kern, Notaro, Polistina, Smith and Bucci voted yes). Clerk Mary Canesi told council staff had circulated a chart showing past field use and recommended the adjusted dates to resolve overlaps.
Councilman Smith raised concern about a ‘third group’ using city fields and asked whether the applicants were present to answer questions. When asked whether "Miranda" (identified only by her first name in the record) was present, there was no response.
Subsequently, the council voted on two separate Skyhawks Sports applications. Councilman Notaro moved and Councilman Dewees seconded adoption of Resolution 52-2026 (Skyhawks volleyball). By roll call every council member voted no and the motion failed. The council then moved and failed Resolution 53-2026 (Skyhawks field hockey) in the same manner; Solicitor Facenda had earlier suggested removing Resolution 53-2026 from the consent agenda until the scheduling conflict was addressed.
The council adopted the broader consent agenda (Resolutions 39-2026 through 50-2026 and 54-2026 through 57-2026) in a single motion (moved by Councilman Notaro, seconded by Councilman Dewees) with a unanimous roll call in favor.
What happens next: Mainland Youth Lacrosse’s amended permit was approved and the Skyhawks applications failed for lack of council support and absence of on-site representation. Any further requests or appeals by the applicant organizations would need to be resubmitted or brought back to council for reconsideration.
