Northfield council discusses field scheduling and facility-use conflicts; new youth group proposes shared practices

City councilors at the Feb. 10 work session debated how to handle multiple facility-use applications and scheduling conflicts among local youth sports groups.
Council President Bucci recommended approving two Mustang Baseball camp applications while members expressed concerns that long-term or all-week applications from groups such as Northfield Little League could limit access by others. “If Little League puts in for seven days a week for nine months, it kind of cuts everyone else out,” Councilwoman Kern said.
Clerk Mary Canesi explained the ordinance requires applicants to submit requests and for council approval to use municipal fields, and she said the clerk’s office has been instructing applicants to appear before council. Solicitor Facenda confirmed it is the council’s authority to approve or deny applications and suggested the council may change the approval process if it chooses to do so in the future.
Sean Coyle, a Linwood resident representing a new 10U team called Shoreline Baseball, asked the council to allow practices in Northfield while he said home games would be held in Linwood. Coyle said the team planned to coordinate schedules with existing groups. Councilmembers agreed to arrange a meeting with league liaisons (Northfield Little League and FAN) to work out schedules and reduce conflicts.
Council did not take a recorded roll-call vote on approvals during the work session; members said a separate formal meeting or resolution process governs final scheduling approvals.
