School board debates retreat dates and regular academic reporting; members urge clearer data cadence

The Virginia Beach School Board discussed options for rescheduling its summer retreat and asked staff to provide clearer guidance about regular academic reporting at a recent administrative workshop.
Chair Kathleen Brown said several members indicated they might not be able to attend the scheduled retreat and asked Dr. Robertson to develop alternate date options. "You have options," Dr. Robertson told the board, suggesting June 23 (a scheduled board meeting) and June 24 as a contiguous retreat option or splitting retreat days across June and July, but he warned the retreat could not be moved past July 14–15 because of a scheduled administrative conference.
Board members described scheduling conflicts and concerns about staff vacations. "I don't want anyone else to have to change vacation day," Ms. Melnick said, urging the board to keep scheduled dates if a quorum is available.
Several trustees asked the superintendent and staff to provide regular academic updates. "There's nothing more important to me than student academic achievement," Mr. Callan said, asking that the board receive periodic reports showing benchmarks and academic movement. Dr. Robertson responded that monthly reporting would be a challenge because division-level data are available at specific assessment periods; he recommended the board align requests with benchmark and SOL testing windows and noted planned agenda items in April and May that include achievement and targeted support updates.
Other members suggested the topic be taken up at the retreat to define which metrics the board wants on a routine basis. Ms. Melnick also asked for reimplementation of the equity dashboard, saying it previously provided a useful snapshot for equity-related data and is currently missing from publicly available tools.
The discussion concluded with staff agreeing to bring date options for retreat planning and to coordinate the timing and scope of data presentations so that the board can continue an academic focus without presenting partial or out-of-sync figures.
