Maywood trustees adopt FY2019/2020 budget after reallocating intern, youth funds

The Village of Maywood Board of Trustees adopted the Fiscal Year 2019–2020 operating budget on April 16, approving an amendment that reduced the Intern Program allocation from $15,000 to $5,000 and increased the Summer Youth Program from $40,000 to $50,000.
The action came after the board recessed into a public hearing at 7:09 p.m. Mayor Edwenna Perkins presided and Village Manager Willie Norfleet Jr. read the published hearing notice before Finance Director Lanya Satchell presented a final summary of the proposed budget for the May 1, 2019–April 30, 2020 fiscal year. Trustees asked staff for clarifications on program management and enrollment targets during the presentation.
Trustee Isaiah Brandon moved the amendment to reallocate funds; Trustee K. Wellington seconded. Human Resources Coordinator LaSondra Banks told the board her office managed the intern program for the past year and cited a target of roughly 45–50 students with scheduling adjustments as needed. The amendment passed with five ayes (Mayor Perkins and Trustees I. Brandon, A. Sanchez, K. Wellington and M. Lightford) and one recorded nay (Trustee H. Yarbrough); Trustee R. Rivers was absent.
After the amendment was approved, Trustee Brandon moved to approve the FY2019/2020 budget ordinance and Trustee Michael Lightford seconded. The board voted to adopt the ordinance; the record lists Mayor Perkins and Trustees H. Yarbrough, I. Brandon, A. Sanchez, K. Wellington and M. Lightford voting in favor and no recorded nays.
During the hearing, four members of the public—K. Sorenson, C. Vandiver, L. Redmond and G. Clay—addressed the board with comments related to the budget and village matters; staff and trustees responded. The hearing closed at 8:20 p.m., and the board reconvened the regular meeting at 8:21 p.m.
The approved budget governs municipal operations for May 1, 2019–April 30, 2020. The amendment specifies a $10,000 transfer from the Intern Program to the Summer Youth Program; other line-item details were presented in the Finance Director’s detailed budget report dated April 11, 2019.
