Summary
At its April 15 meeting the Monroe County Capital Improvement Board accepted conveyances of multiple convention-center parking parcels from city and county authorities and authorized the board president to seek formal negotiations for the College Square site and request a 30-day delay in any public offering.
The Monroe County Capital Improvement Board on April 15 voted to accept conveyances of several parking parcels offered by the city redevelopment commission and the Monroe County Board of Commissioners and authorized the board president to open formal negotiations to acquire the nearby College Square site for a potential host hotel.
The board approved a resolution to accept parcels described as the South Overflow parking lot and the lot behind the Courtyard by Marriott that the city redevelopment commission offered. It then approved a second resolution accepting county-transferred parcels including the West parking lot and parcels south of Smith Avenue to 2nd Street, excluding a privately owned building. The conveyances were presented to the board as part of the convention center expansion project and were accepted by roll call with the voting members present voting yes.
Chair said the transfers secure land needed for expansion and create an opportunity to identify property for a hotel development. The Chair said the College Square site to the north is the preferred hotel site and noted that a prior negotiation with a hotel developer concluded in December 2025. The board authorized the Chair to "communicate with Deborah Meyerson, the president of the redevelopment commission, a request for formal negotiations for acquisition of the College Square site," and to request that any public offering of the site be postponed for 30 days or until the CIB's May 20 meeting so the board can complete negotiations.
The motion to authorize negotiations and delay any public offering was moved, seconded and approved by the voting members present. The Chair said he would communicate the request immediately following the meeting.
During public comment, Sydney Zulek, Bloomington City Council District 6 vice president, said she supports the board's effort to enter negotiations for the College Square property and thanked the board for its work.
The board set its next meeting for May 20, 2026 at 3 p.m.
