Members of the Satellite Beach Youth Council spent much of the Oct. 28 meeting brainstorming outreach and project ideas with staff and the city manager present.
Potential priorities the council discussed include increasing youth involvement; environmental projects focused on the Indian River Lagoon such as cleanups, oyster mats and mangrove plantings; and public‑awareness campaigns (posters, trivia posts, short videos) to promote stewardship. Members suggested partnering with local groups including the Brevard Zoo, the city’s beautification and sustainability boards, school student governments and PAL. One staff member proposed a storm‑drain mural/adopt‑a‑drain initiative to highlight that stormwater drains lead directly to the lagoon; members responded positively.
The council also debated social media approaches — several members preferred Instagram for reaching teens while recognizing Facebook is more effective at reaching parents — and volunteered a social media team to develop content. Members agreed they could do preparatory work outside meetings but would bring drafts and proposals back to a public meeting for discussion and approval to comply with Sunshine Law and public‑records rules. The council discussed planning outreach at upcoming community events (Ocean Reef Festival, founders day) and agreed to consider shirts and branding for identification at public activities.
Staff and the city manager offered limited start‑up support, said they could provide a small budget for projects and noted that social media content tied to council business becomes a public record.
