Satellite Beach Youth Council elects Alex LaFortune as chair, Charlotte Barnes as vice chair

The Satellite Beach Youth Council elected Alex LaFortune as chair and Charlotte Barnes as vice chair during its first official meeting on Oct. 28, 2019.
Members opened nominations and several candidates described their qualifications. One member moved to nominate Alex LaFortune; another member seconded the motion. After the group had a chance to discuss and take public comment, the council voted and the presiding officer announced that the motion to elect LaFortune had passed. LaFortune then presided over the meeting and called the vote for vice chair; Charlotte Barnes was nominated, seconded and elected by the council.
The council followed the procedural steps described earlier in the meeting: nomination, a second, opportunity for discussion and then a vote. Staff reminded members about the role of alternates in voting when regular members are absent and that officers have responsibilities such as running meetings and keeping order. The chair and vice chair will lead agenda items and coordinate with staff for meeting preparation going forward.
Next steps the council agreed on included drafting a mission and vision statement ahead of the next meeting and organizing committees or volunteer teams to work on outreach, social media and project proposals. The newly elected officers will coordinate those efforts with staff.
