Nooksack Valley board approves hires, retirements, vehicle surplus and payroll vouchers

At its Jan. 15 regular meeting the Nooksack Valley School Board approved several routine personnel and operational items.
Personnel: The board approved the hire of Debra Huskey as Head Custodian at Sumas Elementary, effective Feb. 2, 2026. The board also approved temporary hires for the remainder of the 2025-26 school year: Juliana West (7th math and science teacher, effective Jan. 5—June 12, 2026), Trevor Stephens (8th social studies and science, effective Jan. 12—June 12, 2026), Taryn Potter (Paraeducator III, Sumas Elementary, effective Jan. 5—Jan. 12, 2026), Eric Zamora (art teacher, effective Jan. 12—Apr. 3, 2026), Christopher Fuhrman (Paraeducator III, one-year assignment, Nooksack Valley High School), and Lincoln Vander Veen (Paraeducator II, one-year assignment, Nooksack Valley Middle School). Motions for these hires were moved and seconded as recorded and carried 4-0.
Retirements: The board approved retirements with gratitude for Pamela Bromley (Food Services Assistant, NVHS) effective Feb. 28, 2026; Marta Johnston (Business Manager) effective June 30, 2026; and Carol Lagasse (Administrative Assistant Student Services) effective June 30, 2026. The retirement motion was moved by Shelley Harder and seconded by Halli Kimball and carried 4-0.
Surplus vehicles and finance: Superintendent Matt Galley recommended declaring two district vans (model years 1992 and 1996) surplus; the board approved the surplus declaration by a recorded 4-0 vote. The board also approved payroll and vouchers as presented; the minutes list multiple General Fund check ranges with totals as provided and an ASB payment. The motion to approve payroll and vouchers was moved by Halli Kimball, seconded by Shelley Harder and carried unanimously.
