The board approved variances allowing larger and additional wall signs for the Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center at 8000 North Ocean Drive, with NSU counsel saying the signs support branding and visibility for marine research and the board carrying the motion by acclamation.
The Planning & Development Board approved variances Wednesday to allow expanded signage for the Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center at 8000 North Ocean Drive.
Assistant planner Jesus Valdelamar presented a dual variance request on behalf of NSU: to increase maximum permitted wall sign area from 150 square feet to 583 square feet and to allow six wall signs where the code permits three. Valdelamar said staff found the variances met the zoning variance criteria given the facility’s institutional use, orientation and limited visibility from the public right‑of‑way, and recommended approval.
NSU counsel Liz Summerstein told the board the proposed signage supports a branding effort to position the center as a regional hub for marine conservation and research. "NSU is trying to reposition the... center for it to be the hub of conservation and marine research in the South Florida area," Summerstein said, and explained the larger wall sign would be placed on the western elevation facing the Intracoastal to provide wayfinding for boaters.
Board members asked why several large signs were proposed given the building location and limited roadside visibility; staff and applicant explained that five signs already exist on the building and the proposal adds one new wall sign and a parapet sign for branding and wayfinding for maritime traffic. Counsel said the parapet sign will be internally lit and the wall sign externally lit and will comply with lighting standards.
The chair moved a vote by acclamation to express full board support for NSU’s effort; a second followed and the board carried the motion by acclamation with no opposition.
The board’s action will be forwarded to permitting and inspection processes for final sign permits and any required lighting plans.
